Puppy Buyers Beware!!!!  Just based on a website, it is difficult to distinguish a caring, ethical breeder from a back yard breeder, or worse yet, someone who is just out to deceive you and make money.

When shopping for a puppy, insist on seeing copies of health clearances and a pedigree. Use the pedigree to look up the puppies relatives on the OFA website at www.offa.org.

To Qualified Homes Only

A Great Dane is not for everyone. Big dog equals big responsibility! It is often said that owning a Great Dane is a lifestyle choice. If you can't handle:

  •  dog slobber

  •  dirt and large muddy footprints in your house

  •  emergency vet bills easily over $1000

  •  destruction of your personal property

  •  damage to lawns, gardens, and landscaping

Don't get a Great Dane!

To successfully own a Dane you must:

  •  educate yourself on nutrition and health issues

  •  have appropriate living arrangements

  •  do obedience training

  •  following the advice of your breeder

  •  have patience and perseverance!!!

Guarantees

An ethical breeder will stand behind the health and temperament of their puppies and provide written guarantees. If for any reason you can not keep your puppy, an ethical breeder  will always insist on taking back a puppy you can no longer keep.

Puppy Contracts/Limited Registrations

All well-bred puppies should be sold with a contract. The purpose of this is to protect both parties and clearly communicate expectations and responsibilities. In addition, an ethical breeder will usually sell companion puppieson a limited AKC registration. Dogs with limited registration can compete in performance events but any puppies produced by them cannot be registered with the AKC.

Prices

It is often said that if you can't afford the purchase price of a well-bred Dane, they you probably can't afford to properly care for a Dane throughout its lifetime. With this giant breed comes great responsibility.
